Meet Anna - New PhD in the A&A and E&O Teams
Anna has been at NQCP as a research assistant since September. She is now stepping into a new role as a PhD student here at NQCP in both our Algorithms & Applications and Education & Outreach groups. We caught up with her to ask a few questions about her team and project:

Since you are partly in the Algorithms and Applications (A&A) group can you tell us a bit about it?
Quantum Computers are really exciting pieces of machinery, but we can’t just build them without knowing how to use them. That’s what the A&A team is for! We study systems in chemistry and life-science to figure out how quantum computers can help in these fields once the hardware is ready. We also help guide the different pilot-lines by giving certain criteria and specifications on the abilities of the hardware they develop.
What about the Education and Outreach (E&O) group?
The E&O group is our link to the public. We develop all kinds of materials (workshops, lectures, lab visits, educational texts, etc.) that teach quantum mechanics at a bunch of different levels, from high-school students to graduate level courses and even non-scientist professionals.
What is your PhD project about?
For my A&A part I study quantum systems whose time evolution dynamics mimic those of certain well-known quantum algorithms, trying to learn new things about their properties and limitations using toolboxes from other areas of quantum mechanics, such as particle physics and condensed matter theory. The hope is to improve our understanding of what exactly makes certain quantum algorithms better than their non-quantum counterparts. And for the E&O part I’m helping with educating the quantum scientists of the future as well as preparing the public for quantum technologies by organizing workshops and developing teaching material.
Why did you decide to do a PhD at NQCP?
There are so many reasons! First and foremost, the people and the city are absolutely wonderful—warm, welcoming, and full of energy. From a professional perspective, this project is a great opportunity for me to apply my background in particle theory in a completely new scientific environment. The chance to explore fresh ideas, collaborate with brilliant colleagues, and push the boundaries of research makes this experience very exciting!
Thank you for taking the time to chat Anna! We are happy to have you.
