The first group is ready for the new quantum education

MSc QIS

The MSc programme in Quantum Information Science has admitted its first students, starting after the summer holidays. Many applied, and 42 were accepted.

The 11 Danish students admitted to the programme will be part of an international environment. There will be six students from China and Spain respectively, four from Greece, two from Ireland, Slovakia and Austria respectively – and one from respectively Bangladesh, India, Croatia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland, Serbia and the USA.

The education is a joint venture between the University of Copenhagen and The Technical University of Denmark (DTU), and the teaching will take place at both institutions. The education utilizes the very strong research environments that already exist within the area at UCPH and DTU.

At UCPH three departments collaborate on the programme: The Department of Mathematical Sciences, Niels Bohr Institute and the Department of Computer Science.

The Master's programme is an interdisciplinary program that combines the subjects of physics, computer science, mathematics and chemistry.

The admitted students' backgrounds cover a wide range; they are bachelor in mathematics, computer science, physics, engineering physics, astrophysics, photonics, electrical engineering, nanoscience or informatics.

According to the head of studies Jan Phillip Solovej, the students must therefore first learn to speak the same 'quantum language'.

"The students must go through several joint compulsory courses, which must give them a basic understanding of quantum information theory and on which platforms the technology can be practically used. After that, the candidates have the opportunity to specialize," he explains.
