The devil is in the materials

Like all technologies, quantum computing is bound to physical devices that are exquisitely sensitive to all the defects and non-idealities that emerge from physical growth and fabrication processes. In this talk I will discuss my path to the world of quantum computing, and the efforts we have taken to understand and control the materials issues, specifically in superconducting qubit devices, as well as some interesting side-quests into dark matter detection.
