Intra- and Interconnects

The Team

The Intra- and Interconnects Team, led by Assistant Professor Shingo Kono, explores novel hybrid quantum platforms based on superconducting circuits that combine the complementary strengths of distinct quantum systems. The team focuses on developing peripheral and enabling technologies that strengthen the scalability and feasibility of fault-tolerant quantum computing. By seamlessly intra- and inter-connecting unique functionalities across different modules and units, superconducting quantum processors can gain new capabilities, including long-distance communication, quantum-limited amplification, long-lived quantum memory, nonreciprocal signal routing, and quantum transduction. This intra- and inter-connect approach enables co-design, co-development, and co-optimization of the entire quantum computing stack, thereby enhancing fidelity, speed, and scalability, and paving the way toward practical fault-tolerant quantum computing.

Our Focus: Intra- and Inter-Connect Architectures

Our research focuses on developing multi-functional hybrid quantum systems based on superconducting circuits, including superconducting qubits, microwave circuits, parametric amplifiers, mechanical oscillators, and magnetic crystals. Beyond hybridizing distinct quantum systems, we aim to bridge fundamental and applied domains — connecting quantum and classical technologies, theory and experiment, and academic and industrial efforts — to address the key challenges of realizing scalable and fault-tolerant quantum computing.

Our current developments include:

  • Scalable sample packaging solutions for integrated quantum devices
  • High-gain, broadband quantum-limited parametric amplifiers
  • Advanced characterization platforms for studying quantum decoherence mechanisms
  • Long-lived quantum memories based on mechanical oscillators
  • Nonreciprocal quantum devices leveraging magnetic crystals
